1865

The ‘Ballarat District Orphan Asylum’ is founded by a group of philanthropists in response to wide-scale neglect and abandonment of children and wives during the gold rush. The Foundation Stone is laid by the Hon. J. McCulloch, Chief Secretary of the Colony, on the 8th of December, 1865

1909

The Ballarat District Orphan Asylum changes name to become the Ballarat Orphanage

1917

Trees were planted in an Avenue of Honour, dedicated to 105 Orphanage old boys who served during World War I. Named Arthur Kenny Avenue in tribute to the Superintendent of the Orphanage

1965

Commemoration of 100 years

1968

Organisation changes name to Ballarat Children’s Homes

1991

CAFS opens the first Wozzles Warehouse in Grenville Street offering affordable goods
and clothing for the local community. Makes a profit in its first year, and quickly expands
to two other locations

1992    

Name changes to Ballarat Children’s Homes & Family Services Inc. as it becomes incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act

1998

Ballarat Children’s Homes & Family Services Inc. becomes Child & Family Services Inc.

2000

Heritage Services program established to support past residents of the Ballarat Orphanage/Children’s Homes

2015

Commemoration of 150 years of CAFS supporting children and families
